Coral Reefs
Coral reefs are the most diverse ecosystems on Earth. They protect coastlines from the damaging effects of waves and storms; provide habitats for many marine species; provide a source of nitrogen and other essential nutrients for food chains; provide spawning areas for fish; provide a record of climatic events over the past million years that are recorded by the changes in coral growth patterns.
The Great Barrier Reef generates more than $1.5 billion every year for the Australian economy, from fishing and tourism.
Management strategies:
- Zoning plans
- Control and removal of exotic species
- Conservation and recreational use policies
