Population Growth Rate and Change

Population growth refers to the change in the total number of individuals in a population over a period of time.

This change occurs through four key demographic processes. Births and immigration increase population size. Deaths and emigration reduce it. By comparing all four processes we can determine whether a population increases, decreases or remains stable.

Population depends on the number of individuals added to the population from births and immigration, minus the number lost through deaths and emigration.

You may be asked to calculate percentage change of a population too.

Population growth rate must include the time over which the change occurs.

If data cover several months or years, divide the percentage growth by the time period given to find the growth rate per unit time.
